Required code
The SDK injects MRAID, and it may already be in the default state when your script runs. Check before waiting for ready:
var STORE_URL = "https://apps.apple.com/app/id000000000";
function start() {
installButton.addEventListener("click", function () {
mraid.open(STORE_URL);
});
}
if (window.mraid && mraid.getState() === "loading") {
mraid.addEventListener("ready", start);
} else {
start();
}
Use mraid.isViewable() and the viewableChange event before starting animation or sound. Chartboost's docs recommend this viewport:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width,initial-scale=1,maximum-scale=1">
What changed at Chartboost
LoopMe acquired Chartboost in December 2024, and chartboost.com now redirects to LoopMe. Chartboost's self-serve advertiser pages, including its MRAID playable spec and upload tester, were online until mid-2026 and have since been taken down. Its live documentation now covers the Chartboost Exchange, where DSPs bid playables into Chartboost's interstitial and rewarded inventory.
So if you're buying Chartboost traffic today, the playable usually goes through your DSP or a partner, and it has to meet the exchange rules on this page. When a DSP bids a playable, the bid must be marked crtype: "MRAID playable" with attribute 13, or the exchange drops it on rewarded placements.
The 3 MB single-file limit comes from Chartboost's last published self-serve spec (last modified March 2026). Building to it keeps a playable safe on both routes.
Creative rules
- No custom close button. The SDK always shows its own.
- Open the store only from a tap. Redirecting on load and auto-downloads are against Chartboost's content guidelines.
- No fake system alerts and no collecting personal information.
- Make it work on phones and tablets, in both orientations. The old self-serve tester checked resizing and rotation.
Why Chartboost rejects playables
- The install button doesn't use
mraid.open(url), so the click isn't registered. - It calls unsupported MRAID methods (
useCustomClose,expand,resize) or has its own close button. - Over 3 MB, or not a single bundled HTML file (self-serve spec).
- An
http://URL, an iframe, orwindow.locationnavigation. - Audio that doesn't start muted, or no mute button.
- A bid without
crtype: "MRAID playable"and attribute 13 (exchange).
Chartboost doesn't publish a rejection list; these come from its exchange and creative guidelines.
Common questions
What is the file size limit for Chartboost playable ads?
Chartboost's last published self-serve spec allowed one bundled HTML file of up to 3 MB. The Chartboost Exchange sets no hard limit and recommends staying under 5 MB including assets loaded at render time.
Do Chartboost playables use MRAID?
Yes. Chartboost supports MRAID 1.0 and some MRAID 2.0 methods. The install button calls mraid.open(url).
Can a Chartboost playable have its own close button?
No. The Chartboost SDK always shows its own close button, after 5 seconds on interstitials and 20 seconds on rewarded, and mraid.useCustomClose isn't supported.
Do Chartboost playables need to start muted?
Yes, in practice. Chartboost requires audio creatives to start muted with a mute button unless the bid request explicitly allows audio, and audio is blocked by default on the exchange.
Can I still upload playables to Chartboost directly?
Chartboost's self-serve advertiser docs and upload tester were taken down in 2026 after the LoopMe acquisition. Playables now mostly reach Chartboost inventory through DSPs on the Chartboost Exchange.
